How to Recover Deleted PST Files and Fix Outlook Corruption

If you have accidentally deleted an Outlook PST file and you can no longer find it in the application, then the situation might appear catastrophic. But what you need to know is that there are a few methods that allow people to recover Outlook PST files without any issues.

However, before you try any of the methods that we are presenting to you in this guide, you need to make sure that you are no longer using any drive, as the files will only be present on your drive till the same is not used for some other file. Once you have confirmed that you have lost the file, you need to rely on these methods immediately to get your files back. So, if you are looking for how to recover deleted Outlook PST files, this is the place for you.

Method 1: Try the Pre-Installed Options to get Deleted PST Files Back

Getting your Outlook PST file back is almost a sure thing if you use a data recovery tool like Disk Drill. Still, there are a bunch of reasons it could make sense to start with the solutions we’ll mention here first, before anything else:

  • Your Outlook PST file sat on an SSD or NVMe drive, and if TRIM kicks in automatically, it can sort of “obliterate” your deleted Outlook PST before you even get a chance to recover it.

  • There’s no real need to download and install extra apps when the fix may already be inside Windows or Outlook.

  • You avoid waiting through a full, time-heavy scan of terabytes of storage just to find a single Outlook PST.

Method 2: Look in the Recycle Bin

If the PST was deleted recently, you can often grab it back from the Recycle Bin. Provided it didn’t go beyond the Recycle Bin’s size limit, and it wasn’t removed via Shift + Delete. You need to make sure that Outlook is stopped on your device, after which you need to look for the file in the Recycle Bin. If the file has been deleted recently, there is a high chance you will get it back.

Method 3: Rely on File History Copies

Windows includes backup features, with File History being the simplest way to recover a PST file. File History runs in the background; it keeps point-in-time copies of key files, including the Documents/Outlook Files, and the PST inside it, without asking you to do anything. So, the next time you encounter an Outlook file corruption problem, this might be the solution that fixes it.

Method 4: Check OneDrive Version History

If you use OneDrive and it synced your user data to the cloud, then also check how your Outlook PST was saved. Was the PST located in your user account’s Documents folder, or did you move it into a OneDrive-monitored folder that syncs with the online servers? If yes, it’s very likely you can download the Outlook PST file from OneDrive there.
